French Grenache and Spanish Garnacha

September 20, 2013

Grenache (or Garnacha as it is known in Spain) is one of the most widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world. It ripens late so thrives in hot, dry conditions such those in as Spain and the south of France.
Grenache is generally low in acidity so is usually blended with other varietals as the main constituent - although there are notable exceptions such as Priorat - so shows many interesting guises.
We have enjoyed bottles from both sides of the Pyrenees to see how the varietal responds to different terroir, winemaking techniques and blending partners.
